Syria Diesel Price Hikes Spark Nationwide Fuel Protest Wave

Syrian authorities have raised diesel prices by 40%, prompting widespread fuel cost protests across the nation. Protesters have set tires ablaze and blocked oil transport convoys heading to major roads and refineries, according to reports. Reuters reported that Syria has increased diesel prices to 175 Syrian pounds per liter (approximately 1,770 won). Some protesters are demanding the resignation of energy and economic ministers along with the head of the Syrian Oil Company. The Syrian Energy Ministry stated on Tuesday that the price hike is a temporary measure due to rising international procurement costs and increased import dependency. Reuters also reported that Syria's largest refinery, Banias Refinery, has been undergoing full maintenance for about three months. Additionally, reports indicate that Ukraine's attacks on Russian refineries have reduced production, while Russia has restricted gasoline and diesel exports, putting pressure on Syria's supply of Russian fuel.
