Tokenized Money Market Funds Differ by Redemption, Fees, and DeFi Integration

Tokenized Money Market Funds Differ by Redemption, Fees, and DeFi Integration

Tokenized money market funds may hold the same underlying assets, such as U.S. Treasury bonds or repurchase agreements, but their structure varies based on redemption timelines, fee structures, on-chain liquidity, and DeFi integration capabilities. Centrifuge plans to publish a report analyzing these differences, though it has not disclosed an official release date or final content details.

In its March 31 'Tokenization Outlook 2026' report, Centrifuge surveyed 150 industry participants, finding that 86% identified expanding distribution of existing products as a priority over launching new ones within the next 12–18 months. Additionally, 31% viewed programmability as a key differentiator for on-chain finance moving forward, emphasizing the importance of connecting tokenized funds with other financial services and automation.

Tokenized money market funds represent traditional financial products whose shares are tokenized on blockchain. While the underlying assets may be identical, redemption options differ—some allow daily redemptions while others require several days for processing, impacting capital management convenience. Fee structures also vary: the portion of returns allocated to operational costs differs between short-term Treasury bonds and repurchase agreements, meaning actual investor returns can diverge despite similar asset bases.

DeFi compatibility is another structural factor. Funds must allow tokens to be used as collateral in lending protocols or as liquidity provision tools to integrate with other on-chain financial products. Simply listing fund shares on a blockchain does not guarantee this interoperability; factors like transfer flexibility, smart contract connectivity with lending and trading systems, and investor eligibility verification also play roles.

Panera Capital’s 'State of Tokenization' report estimates only 12% of tokenized assets have reached the stage where they can seamlessly integrate with DeFi. This figure reflects a gap between asset issuance and practical usage. Panera noted that while issuance scales, the structural design for use cases like collateral, lending, and liquidity provision is becoming the next critical focus.

Regulatory frameworks also influence transfer flexibility. In documents submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), JPMorgan’s on-chain money market fund includes a whitelist procedure that restricts token transactions to pre-approved blockchain addresses only. The SEC filing explains that blockchain balance movements may not always align with official ownership records, as legal title transfers require updating an investor registry maintained by a custodian—typically updated daily.

JPMorgan Asset Management launched its tokenized money market fund JLTXX on Ethereum in May, investing in U.S. Treasuries and Treasury-backed repurchase agreements. The SEC filing lists the total annual management fee at 0.71% before waivers and 0.16% after waivers.

The JLTXX example demonstrates that while tokenized funds can be designed as on-chain cash equivalents offering interest, regulatory requirements and investor registration procedures complicate free transfers between unapproved addresses. Fund utility depends not only on underlying assets but also on redemption processing, ownership tracking, address restrictions, and DeFi integration methods.

Centrifuge’s upcoming report will focus on comparing how tokenized money market funds are distributed across chains and connected to other financial protocols rather than simply confirming their existence on-chain. Official release dates and detailed findings remain undisclosed.
