Trump Criticizes Fed Rate Hike, Calls for Rates Below 1%

Donald Trump, former U.S. president, has publicly criticized the Federal Reserve's decision to raise interest rates, stating that U.S. rates should remain below 1%. Speaking to NBC News on September 16 (local time), Trump argued that with America's strong credit rating and economic conditions, the country deserves some of the lowest interest rates globally.

Trump stated that while the U.S. economy is holding up despite high rates, they should be lowered further, adding that 'the U.S. rate should be below 1%.' He claimed this would allow America to continue enjoying an economic boom as new investments flow in. Trump also urged a swift reduction, saying 'America needs to lower rates—and fast.'

Trump previously threatened to suspend trade with countries running U.S. trade deficits if the Fed does not cut rates. On September 4, he warned that if the Federal Reserve fails to lower rates, the U.S. would halt trade with nations contributing to its deficit.

The former president also dismissed concerns about the U.S. fiscal deficit, stating it could be resolved through simple measures targeting other countries. 'America runs a trade deficit with most nations, and by ending those trades, we could save at least $150 billion annually,' he said. 'We've chosen not to do so until now, but we will eventually.'

Trump further argued that the term 'deficit' is merely a euphemism for loss, adding, 'America supports nearly all countries globally, and this cannot continue.' He also noted that while criticizing the Fed's rate decision, he has not directly pressured Chair Jerome Powell, instead attributing responsibility to the Federal Reserve Board, which he described as 'very hostile and very political,' with members being either politicians or appointed by them.
