US 10-Year Treasury Yield Surges Past 5% – Highest Since 2007

The US 10-year Treasury yield has surpassed 5%, hitting its highest level since 2007. Rising oil prices, inflation worries, and expanded bond issuance have been identified as factors weighing on the bond market.

According to a Bloomberg report via overseas economic news channel Walter Bloomberg on May 15, the US 10-year Treasury yield broke above 5%, marking its highest level in nearly two decades.

The Bloomberg channel noted that rising oil prices are exerting price pressure, while large-scale bond issuance is pushing down bond prices, leading to higher yields. Market expectations suggest a high likelihood of the Federal Reserve raising interest rates on May 16 (local time).

Some market strategists have also warned that if the 10-year yield continues to exceed 5%, it could impact capital flows into riskier assets like stocks due to relatively higher bond yields. A few analysts have even suggested the yield might reach 6% if rates continue to climb.
