US-China Trade Truce Extension Hopes Rise Ahead of Summit

With the upcoming summit between U.S. and Chinese leaders, attention is focusing on potential extensions to their trade truce as both nations discuss lowering tariffs on select items including American energy and agricultural products.
According to Bloomberg, the U.S. and China are negotiating tariff reductions on approximately $30 billion worth of traded goods, building on existing plans. Discussions also include applying most-favored-nation (MFN) tariff rates to certain Chinese products. The talks may involve reducing tariffs on Chinese raw materials and components used by U.S. manufacturers.
Agreement on these matters could emerge during the upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping scheduled for April 24 in Washington, D.C., or at high-level negotiations set to take place before then. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen will meet with Chinese Vice Premier Hu Weifeng this weekend to coordinate agenda items for the summit, though specific details remain undisclosed.
Agriculture is expected to be a key topic of discussion. COFCO Group officials may accompany President Xi on his trip to the U.S., and a delegation of over 10 CEOs from Chinese companies is also under consideration.
However, competition in advanced technologies including AI, along with China's relations with Iran and Russia, remain potential variables in the negotiations. Bessen emphasized at a House Financial Services Committee hearing that maintaining technological superiority was crucial for the U.S. in its competition with China on AI.
Bessen also stated that discussions regarding sanctions related to the war in Iran would be part of his meeting with Hu Weifeng, as the U.S. continues to strengthen economic pressure on Iran while monitoring financial ties between China and Iran.
If an agreement is reached on extending the trade truce and lowering tariffs, it could alleviate one burden from global markets already facing uncertainty due to Middle East conflicts, Ukraine war, rising oil prices, and renewed inflation concerns.
