US Invests $215 Million in Quantum Computing Race…Should Bitcoin Be Worried?

The US government has committed up to $215 million to develop machines that could mark a turning point in quantum computing. This investment may have long-term implications for Bitcoin.
The Department of Energy launched the 'Quantum Genesis Q Competition' on Thursday, requiring private companies to demonstrate a 'scientifically significant' fault-tolerant quantum computer with at least 100 logical qubits and billions of reliable operations.
The broader program aims to achieve practical deployment by 2028.
Current quantum computers are still far from perfection. Errors can cause lengthy computations to collapse quickly. Fault tolerance allows calculations to continue stably through error correction, making the technology more useful for genuine scientific research.
This could create a critical risk for Bitcoin.
Bitcoin relies on elliptic curve cryptography to prove ownership of coins. A sufficiently powerful quantum computer using Shor's algorithm could reverse public keys to private keys.
Google researchers recently stated that breaking the 256-bit elliptic curve system used by Bitcoin would require approximately 1,200-1,450 logical qubits depending on design.
The Department of Energy aims for a minimum of 100 qubits. Achieving this target would demonstrate practical large-scale error-corrected quantum computing.
Bitcoin's biggest challenge may be an upgrade.
As these machines scale, risks increase. Estimates of how much Bitcoin could be exposed vary widely.
Glassnode calculated that as of May, approximately 6.04 million BTC—30.2% of total supply—was already in publicly exposed output states on-chain. These coins would be the most obvious targets if quantum key hacking becomes practical.
Bitcoin developers are already discussing defenses. Drafts BIP 360 and 361 propose reducing public key exposure and ultimately moving away from today's vulnerable signing methods.
This migration requires participation from wallets, exchanges, custodians, and users, which could take significant time.
The Department of Energy competition is accelerating the practical engineering goals for fault-tolerant quantum computers. Bitcoin currently has time based on hardware and research outlooks, though it's unclear how much.
