The US government has reportedly pressured Mexico to adopt AI hardware regulations aimed at blocking tariff evasion by Chinese companies through Mexican exports. Proposed rules would limit the use of non-North American components in AI hardware production processes, including chips and servers. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) cited sources familiar with negotiations, reporting that the US is urging Mexican authorities to accept new export rules as part of ongoing USMCA renegotiation discussions. AI hardware has become Mexico's top export to the US this year, surpassing automobiles. Since AI equipment produced in Mexico may include components sourced from outside North America, new regulations could impact related manufacturing and export firms. WSJ reported on May 15 that implementation of these origin rules would affect companies producing and exporting AI hardware from Mexico.
