Vitalik Buterin: AI Hacking Threats Overblown, Security Pessimism Misguided

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that concerns about AI-driven hacking capabilities rendering cybersecurity ineffective are exaggerated. In a lengthy post on X, he argued that AI could instead become a tool for creating more secure software by enhancing formal verification methods.
Buterin explained that developers can leverage formal verification—a mathematical proof process ensuring software meets specific properties—to make security inherently favorable to defenders. He noted that as AI's reasoning capabilities improve, the cost of such verification could significantly decrease.
He also highlighted that if AI can prove complex mathematical problems like Navier-Stokes equations or Fermat's Last Theorem, it could similarly verify security claims mathematically. Buterin revealed his net worth is approximately 90% still held in cryptocurrency, suggesting confidence in the safety of digital systems.
However, he acknowledged defining what constitutes 'secure' remains complex. Using Signal as an example, he noted attackers could forge messages, block deliveries, or replay past communications. Other threats include server breaches, manipulated public key discovery processes, and operating system vulnerabilities.
Buterin also cited compromised databases, malicious libraries, compiler issues, and hardware-level data leaks as factors complicating security definitions. Even with encrypted conversations, metadata about who communicates with whom can still be exposed, making mathematical security definitions intricate and potentially requiring over 1,000 lines of code for clarity.
