Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Hathaway Chairman, Shifts to Honorary Role

Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, transitioning to an honorary chairman role. According to blockchain media Cryptopolitan, Buffett announced this decision in a Friday shareholder letter, maintaining his board directorship.
Berkshire will appoint Howard Buffett as the new board chairman per its succession plan, while Susan Decker retains her position as lead independent director. Greg Abel will continue overseeing business operations.
In his letter, Buffett directly referenced aging, stating that time has granted him the opportunity to see Berkshire through a period where he feels most confident about the company's future.
Buffett had previously announced his intention to step down at the 2025 May annual shareholder meeting. The announcement surprised thousands of attendees but followed long-standing succession discussions.
Market focus now centers on Abel’s capital allocation decisions. Berkshire holds $36.55 billion in cash and recently bought back $4.5 billion in shares during Q2.
Berkshire stock rose only about 1% since January 2026, compared to the S&P 500's approximately 11% gain over the same period. Slower growth relative to rising oil prices and a shift toward faster-growing companies were cited as contributing factors.
Abel stated that Buffett’s culture and values will remain central to Berkshire moving forward. Buffett praised Abel, saying he exceeded initial expectations and that the company is in capable hands.
Berkshire began under Buffett’s leadership in 1965 when he acquired control of a struggling New England textile firm. Since then, it has expanded into insurance, energy, railroads, manufacturing, and retail, growing to an approximately $1 trillion enterprise today.
