Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Hathaway Chairman, Succession to Son Howard

Warren Buffett stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway’s board on Friday, passing the role to his son Howard Buffett. The board appointed him honorary chairman, allowing him to remain on the board without involvement in management.

Greg Abel will continue as CEO, handling day-to-day decisions and directing Berkshire’s capital allocation strategy.

Buffett, who turned 96 last month, described the transition as a formal procedure in his shareholder letter. Berkshire Class A shares closed at $763,936 on Thursday, down 2.10%, while Class B shares fell 2.04% to $509.20. The decline occurred before the announcement, with BRK-B trading nearly unchanged at $509.24 in pre-market hours Friday.

Howard Buffett has no public record of comments on Bitcoin or digital assets. He has focused on agriculture, food security, and mine clearance efforts in Ukraine to build a public image, with no direct ties to stock markets. Since 1999, he has run the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and served as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for hunger eradication for nearly a decade.

He was reported last year to have pushed for approximately $1 billion in support for Ukraine. Warren Buffett previously referred to Bitcoin as a 'speculative drug' or gambling token, but Howard has not publicly stated his stance on digital assets.

Berkshire’s cash holdings reached an all-time high of $39.7 billion, with Abel continuing the company’s cautious investment approach. Whether Abel will embrace Bitcoin remains uncertain and is being watched by crypto investors.
