White House Advisor Phelan Warns Fed Rate Hike Is a Mistake

Christopher Phelan, Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors (CEA), has stated that the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate increase would be a mistake. The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce its monetary policy decision today.

Phelan made his remarks on CNBC's 'Closing Bell Overtime,' citing recent inflation data as evidence that the hike is unnecessary. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the Fed's policymaking body, is meeting this week.

Phelan emphasized that inflation has been trending downward over the past three months, pointing to key metrics including the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index. He noted that the Fed previously held off on raising rates during months when inflation was higher, making a current hike difficult to justify.

This debate comes as former President Donald Trump has publicly urged the Fed to lower rates—a direction opposite to what is being considered by policymakers. Phelan's comments were made in an interview with CNBC.

The timing of Phelan's remarks coincides with Bitcoin (BTC) facing potential market reactions to the Fed's rate decision this week. Traders have already factored in the possibility of a rate hike as negative for risk assets.

Higher interest rates reduce the appeal of non-yielding assets like Bitcoin compared to bonds. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell recently stated that the era of low rates is ending, suggesting further measures may be needed to address inflation—a view Phelan has disputed.

Fed observers anticipate a closely divided vote this time as well. The July FOMC meeting previously saw a 9-3 vote to hold rates steady. Whether Powell agrees with Phelan's assessment of inflation or aligns with the rate hike supporters within the FOMC will determine borrowing costs and future market risk appetite.
