Why 'Digital Dollar' Feels Inconvenient: Schwartz Points to Stablecoin Structural Issues

XRP Ledger's core designer and former Ripple CTO David Schwartz admitted developers initially misjudged how digital dollars would be used, a mistake that still causes inconvenient interfaces for stablecoin payments today. According to U.Today on May 15 (local time), this oversight has led to current challenges in the industry.
At the time, developers assumed all dollar-pegged stablecoins would use the same USD ticker code, eliminating the need for ledgers to support individual coin tickers. Instead, wallets could display currency information aligned with the issuer's ticker. However, market reality diverged: fragmented DeFi markets led major players to create separate dollar tokens, forcing users to distinguish between USDT, USDC, and RLUSD instead of simple transfers.
Sh Schwartz believes this has eroded the familiar payment experience for average users. He proposes a two-tier asset display system: one global ticker reflecting the underlying asset (like USD), and another user-defined ticker based on trusted issuers. For example, while he accepts RLUSD, USDT, and USDC as USD, other users or businesses may set different issuer preferences.
XRP Ledger has technically addressed this issue through its Trust Line mechanism, allowing users to clearly specify which asset they receive from which issuer. However, wallet interfaces remain a barrier in practice. Most cryptocurrency wallets still only read textual tickers without reflecting the issuer, preventing stablecoin payments from naturally replacing fiat currency for most users.
Sh Schwartz argues that until wallets flexibly connect issuers and currency codes, stablecoin payments will remain complex tools for niche users rather than seamless replacements for traditional money. The issue highlights that stablecoin adoption bottlenecks may lie more in user interface design than asset structure itself.
