XRP Holding Burden Shifts to Institutions as XRPL Sponsorship Proposal Drafted

If the new XRPL sponsorship amendment is activated, users will be able to create accounts and trade without directly holding XRP. Banks, fintech firms, and platforms as sponsors would cover account reserves and transaction fees on behalf of users. The XLS-68 proposal, titled 'Sponsored Fees and Reserves,' allows one account to pay for another's transaction fees and account/ledger object costs. The document was updated on January 30, 2026, but remains in 'Draft' status.

Users will still control their accounts and private keys; XRP won't be transferred to user wallets from sponsors. Sponsors cover network costs including the standard reserve of 1 XRP per account and an additional 0.2 XRP for ledger objects. For example, sponsoring 1 million accounts would require approximately 1 million XRP in reserves alone, though actual amounts vary based on trust lines, transaction volume, and ledger object count.

Under the proposal, sponsored account reserves are reflected under the sponsor's SponsoringAccountCount rather than the user's account. This could concentrate XRP holdings on institutional balance sheets as XRPL usage grows, but does not necessarily mean institutions will buy new XRP—existing balances may be allocated to sponsorship. Actual demand depends on sponsors' existing balances, number of sponsored accounts, transaction fees, and account retention periods.

The amendment is not yet active on the XRPL mainnet and requires over 80% support from validators for two consecutive weeks. CryptoSlate reported 6 supporting validators as of January 15, below the required threshold of 29. Heartland Ignite noted 5 out of 35 base UNLs supported it in a separate review.

Industry opinions differ: Ctrl Alt suggests sponsorship could lower pre-ownership burdens for financial institutions and improve XRPL access for tokenized asset services. CryptoSlate argues XLS-68 might make XRP less visible to some users, noting that increased usage doesn't always correlate with direct personal holding demand.
