XRP Ledger to Activate XLS-56 Upgrade on September 29

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has surpassed the activation threshold for its 'batching' (XLS-56) upgrade. According to blockchain media U.Today, the amendment secured 82.86% approval in validator votes on September 16, triggering a 14-day countdown.

Under XRPL rules, once this threshold is met, a 14-day timer begins. If maintained for two weeks, the upgrade will automatically apply at 14:06 UTC on September 29.

The core of XLS-56 is batch transaction support, allowing up to eight different users' transactions to be bundled into one package and processed in a single ledger closing. All transactions must execute successfully or be fully canceled. If any transaction fails or price slippage occurs within the bundle, the entire package reverts immediately.

This structure reduces the risk of one party sending assets while the counterparty's transaction stalls. It enables settlement methods like delivery versus payment for tokenized asset ownership transfers and direct NFT exchanges without intermediate XRP or other tokens. Decentralized exchanges can bundle multiple orders, execute the first completed order, and cancel others. Developers can also process service fees alongside user payments in a single transaction.

This marks the second attempt at implementing batching functionality. XRPL initially pursued a version in February but halted it after Cantina AI discovered vulnerabilities in the signing verification logic. Ripple X redesigned the structure, incorporating tests from Halborn and Common Prefix, followed by a public stress test at Shlock AttackCon, with the updated code integrated into xrpld v3.3.0.
